Svatý Jan pod Skalou is a small village with around 200 residents. It lies in the heart of the Český kras Protected Landscape Area, about 5 km from Beroun.

According to legend, the hermit St Ivan lived here, and the first written record of the place dates from 1030. Since 1995, the Baroque monastery has housed Svatojánská kolej, a higher vocational school of education. The Church of St John the Baptist, built between 1657 and 1661, stands beside St Ivan's Cave, which has travertine decoration. The museum Solvayovy lomy lies within the municipality's cadastral area and features a narrow-gauge railway and the Czech Republic's only exhibition on cableways. The family-run Hotel Obecná škola, with its restaurant, offers accommodation and meals. The limestone cliffs are popular with climbers, and the Paraple quarry in the Solvayovy lomy area also has climbing walls.
